Classics Today's "THE TIME OF THE TROUBADOURS" Review

"The members of the Portuguese ensemble Vozes Alfonsinas, led by Manuel Ferreira, certainly have done their homework.

Alfonso may have spoken and written mainly Castilian (Spanish), but he always preferred to write his poetry in Galician Portuguese.

These native singers alter their pronunciation enough for the period, and being Portuguese, naturally pronounce the "s" at the end of words as a soft "shh", which some performers of this repertoire do too harshly.

The mixture of male and female voices throughout adds welcome variety, and all the voices are warm and in tune. The occasional choral harmonies are tight and well balanced."
